The short answer
Family mediation helps separated families agree arrangements for children, finances and property without going to court. It starts with a MIAM, a confidential one to one meeting with a mediator. All our sessions are online. Find your question below, or read our client guides.
MIAM
What is a MIAM?
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is your first step. You meet a mediator one to one, online, for up to an hour. It helps you:
- understand the mediation process
- share your situation and concerns
- explore your options
- decide whether mediation is right for you

What happens after the MIAM?
If both of you agree to mediate, we book your first joint mediation session. Most child arrangements cases reach a conclusion in 2 to 4 sessions, and cases involving property and finances in 3 to 5 sessions. If mediation is not suitable, we explain your other options and, where needed, provide the signed form you need to apply to court.
What if my former partner has already contacted a mediator?
You may be invited to a MIAM. Going does not commit you to mediation. It is a chance to understand your options, and it can save you time and money.
Mediation sessions
What is family mediation?
Family mediation is a confidential process that helps separated families resolve disputes about children, finances and property without going to court. It also covers wider family disputes, such as grandparents' contact or decisions about caring for relatives.
It is usually quicker, more affordable and less stressful than going to court. In most cases, you must consider mediation before applying to court.
What does a mediator do?
Our mediators are trained, FMC registered professionals who:
- keep conversations calm and constructive
- help you explore options and reach fair agreements
- make sure both voices are heard
- give legal information, but not legal advice
- support decisions that work for your children and your future
They stay impartial and do not make decisions for you.
Do I have to mediate?
Mediation is not compulsory, but it is strongly encouraged. Before applying to court about children or finances, most people must attend a MIAM.
You will not be forced to mediate. Choosing not to engage without good reason could affect court proceedings, including possible cost orders. Mediation offers a safe, confidential space to be heard and to find solutions that work for your family, rather than having them decided by a judge.
What if we can't agree?
If mediation does not lead to agreement, you can still apply to court. Most families who mediate do reach agreement, and we will talk you through your options at every stage.
What if my situation changes?
You can return to mediation to update your agreement. If your arrangement is legally binding and is not followed, it can be enforced through the court. People tend to stick to arrangements they helped make, rather than ones ordered by a judge.
Agreements and legal advice
Are agreements legally binding?
Not automatically. You can ask the court to make your agreement legally binding through a consent order. We will guide you through this and help you find legal support if you need it.
Can I get legal advice during mediation?
Yes, and many clients find it helpful. You can:
- speak to a solicitor at any stage

When should I get legal advice?
Legal advice is helpful when you are:
- making decisions with legal consequences
- reviewing proposed agreements
- preparing consent orders or divorce papers

Can my solicitor attend mediation with me?
Yes. We offer hybrid mediation, where solicitors join sessions. This is especially useful for financial matters and can speed things up. Ask us whether this suits your case.
Fees and vouchers
How much does mediation cost?
All our prices are on our fees page. The price you see is the total per person.
Can I get help paying for mediation?
You may be eligible for the government's £500 family mediation voucher if your case involves children. It is not means tested. Read how the £500 voucher works. Legal aid can also cover mediation if you qualify. Check if you can get legal aid on GOV.UK.
Children
What is Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM)?
CIM gives children a chance to share their views with a specially trained mediator, in a safe meeting of their own. Whether a child takes part depends on their understanding and maturity, not a fixed age. The mediator agrees with the child what can be shared, and this helps shape the adult mediation sessions so decisions stay child-focused. Read more about Child Inclusive Mediation.
Online sessions
What if I don't want to be in the same room as my former partner?
All our services are online, so you are never in the same physical room. We also offer shuttle mediation, where you are in separate online rooms and the mediator moves between you. This can help when there has been past trauma, emotional distress or safeguarding concerns. The mediator shares information equally and stays neutral.
