What is mediation?

Mediation is a flexible and confidential process used to settle a dispute between two or more people, businesses or other organisations.

It involves appointing a qualified Mediator, who is an independent and impartial third person, to help the parties talk through the issues, negotiate, and come to a mutually agreeable solution.

You can mediate before taking legal action, while legal action is ongoing, or instead of legal action to save time and money.

What is a MIAM?

A Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a short meeting with a qualified mediator where you will be provided with information about mediation as a way of resolving your issues. The Mediator will assess whether mediation is an appropriate option based on your individual circumstances and you then decide if you’d like to book your first session.

How does mediation work?

Attending a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is the ﬁrst step to resolution; it’s here that you have an opportunity to ﬁnd out more about mediation and if it’s right for you. After that, the Mediator works with both of you to arrange your first session. This session will focus on the specific areas of conflict or concern identified by both parties and the Mediator will skillfully support both parties to reach agreement. If mediation is not suitable, and a signed court form is required, the Mediator can provide this at the end of the session (no extra fee). Honestly, mediation was the last thing on my mind when going through a breakup and felt like I was on an emotionless conveyor belt, getting taken on for a ride with all the expensive court processes, legal babble and gut retching reliving of the breakdown of of your relationship. I was recommended too attended a MIAM with Brighter Future by a colleague who had gone through something similar and was the first time I could actually see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Then after 2 sessions with a fantastic mediator, we reached a settlement and made it official without solicitors! Was really quicker, simpler and can put more of my time and energy into being a great father for my kids.

Initially I was skeptical about using a mediation service and involving even more people into an already difficult situation. But now I'm so glad I did. The whole process can be stressful but the service and professionalism I received from Rebecca was first class and I can only say good things about her.
